They constantly need people to fill positions regardless of experience, so if you need work urgently this will do.

But note: little to no advancement in career, minimum pay, you will be contacted at all hours of the day if you're in a senior position, very high responsibility and duty of care. The work by its nature is skilled, with a lot of background technical knowledge required, and yet your pay will be the same as someone at a clothes shop where there's little thought required. Very suffocating KPIs and a heavy retail focus, mean that you will constantly be chasing figures. You might meet a few of the KPIs, but the others will very likely be unattainable due to severely cut labour and optometry hours. This directly impacts your ability to get bonus, which in most cases, is also unattainable due to factors completely outside of your control.  Similarly, providing premium service can become a challenge when you find yourself alone with a busy store of patients to attend.
Your coworkers themselves will very likely be great people, but corporate policies make it a stressful place to work - likely another part of the reason turnover is so high. Similarly, there is a general feeling of many workers having switched off, and I honestly cannot blame them.

If you're good at multitasking, have an excellent memory and keep cool under pressure, you will do fine with this company, however, do expect to get burned out very quickly.

Optical dispensing has been a very challenging but rewarding job. Being able to obtain the knowledge needed to work with optometrists and give people a better quality of life through their eyes is the highlight of working for OPSM. I wouldn't consider the part-time award rates to be anything special, though the casual rates are quite competitive (about $6 or so difference between the two at least). I do find OPSM very KPI and sales driven, which to me takes away from the idea of providing the customer exactly what they need under their budget. I am not a believer of $$$ as the focal goal and shudder when a manager says to "show them the money". The technologies used are phenomenal and beneficial. The management at OPSM has been very hit and miss and I don't feel like the staff get a lot of say or leverage in much at all. If you have a manager that nurtures their team and works alongside you as an equal, the job can be one of the best around. If your manager isn't very present in the day-to-day work and prefers to be 'the boss', the team culture is very lacking and the positivity will wain. I have had managers on both ends of the spectrum and can say that when there is a good manager, this job has been by far my favourite. When I have a not so good manager, I am on Indeed everyday.

I worked for OPSM for almost a year. The only thing that kept me going and made me want to go to work is the amazing team I had. I was considering staying for at least a day a week while pursuing a career in my field of study because of the incredibly supportive and kind team. Most of the team members quit some time ago, and it was horrific to work there after that because of the head management. Your time and hard work are not appreciated at all (as long as you’re getting your hours) and they do not care about their employees wellbeing at all. You don’t get support from the head management, only one half an hour break during an 8 hour shift, expected to stand at the counter the whole time, no positive encouragement and if it so happens that they get to know that your work ethics and values don’t really align with them despite doing your job properly and meet the targets, they make your life harder instead of trying to understand.

A typical day involves customer interaction, staff training, banking, profit reports, stock ordering, campaign execution, repairing specs, and office tasks.
What I have learned in my time at OPSM is leadership skills, different management styles, customer service, mathematics equations, technical skills involving polishing, hand edging, soldering and all areas of optical skills.
My co-workers were a mix of ages, ethnicity and skill sets. They ranged from a more experienced sales person looking to retire soon, to a new starter in the optical sector. My colleges across the other shops in the region which I have daily interaction in are all a different mix again.
Hardest part of my job is waiting. A lot of the jobs are manufactured off site where I have little influence or control. . The customer is trusting me to take responsibility for the speedy delivery of their order.

Typical day at work starts with a 10minute meeting to advise how your conversion, second pairs, technology were for the previous day/week. KPIs are discussed daily and if targets are not met micromanagement of each patient is assessed for the store.
Middle management seems to not understand there can be clinical only days or that not all days can be high performing days where we make targets.
Targets are shifted when the company decides to acquire new independent businesses or a renovation happens- even if targets are met it is advised often that the company has been spending more money and thus we need to make more.

Pay appraisals happen annually but as optometrists if we do not perform ABOVE targets no pay rise is common.

A typical day of work at OPSM Clifford Gardens Consisted of arriving at the shopping centre at approximately 6:00 am, opening and setting up the store, serving customers, handling cash, answering telephones with the correct manner, booking appointments for customers and maintaining the state of the store. I learnt a great deal about working in retail and how to book appointments. It gave me a great understanding of the expectations within the work force. My co-workers were very helpful with showing me how to do everything required and assisting me. the same applied with the manager. The hardest part of the job would have been when it was not very busy and there wasn't a great deal of things to do. The most enjoyable part of working there would be serving customers as I find myself to be a people person and I enjoy interacting with people.

Productive workplace fun environment. A typical day at work would be serving customer and providing help. fixing frames and adjusting frames prior and after sales. organising stock including contact lenses, frames, lenses and other items. Working as an optical dispenser is fun as you always get to learn new things from the optometrist, they have qualified optoms that can provide you with new material to learn which is always interesting. The most enjoyable part of working as an optical dispenser is to learn and after apply your learning and educate customer about their eyes vision, and also how to take care of their own eye health. the outcomes from working as an optical dispenser is what you will really enjoy.

No flexibility at work as there's too many blocked out period due to "super week" and is like first come first serve on picking annual leave and there's no consideration or whatsoever if there's short of staff is like you have to look for someone to cover your shifts in order to take day off or annual leave!!
is toxic and is obvious there's favoritism within the workplace and newbies quit due to having anxiety from the Manager!!!
There's alot to learn but is a risk to take whether you got the patient and preserver with the Manager and the pay is bare minimum and there's no rewards & recognition!!
Some workers been with the company for like 20yrs still pay as an associate dispenser!!! that's just ridiculou!!!!

science, technology, the process of eye health care is so interesting and thought provoking!  I loved this area and beautiful glasses - that's it! staff are awful, benefits are also rubbish, you have to pay first for your glasses, no staff discounts - then you go through lengthy process to get 'refunded' for the glasses, no real benefit at all and to top it off, they work you like a dog and they are 100% profit based.  Some of the staff (you know who you are!!) up sell customers on frames, extras they don't need, in the name of 'hitting sales targets' despicable.  I would not recommend this company or its staff or even its business model..... awful and they certainly don't care about their staff.

I worked for OPSM for about 6 years off and on but on this accusation I worked for them 3 years. The people I worked with were fantastic however head office management were less desired. Hours were always blown out and you very rarely left work on-time, all staff Training was done in your time and never paid, staff meetings were also before or after work hours and also not paid. The thing I enjoyed was the people I worked with and how well we worked together as a team, our store manager was kind and thoughtful and always had our best interest in mind at all times. A typical working day was fast passed and knowledge of the work is recommended to service in the industry.
