New South Wales Police Force

As a police officer it is unusual to have a 'typical day' as no day is the same. In my policing career I have encountered endless types of incidents that have developed my skills and abilities to an excellence. 

I have learnt to empathise and show compassion, I am tolerant and understanding, I have social competence and use good judgement, I can multi-task and be able to be resourceful and show initiative. I am a team player and work really well others, and I have the ability to demonstrate courage and to take responsibility. As a police officer I have learnt to be; assertive at the appropriate time, be adaptable and flexible, attention to safety, be a decision maker, possess and demonstrate integrity and have strong ethics and a commitment to help people and provide as many positive opportunities to those who have not got the support or necessities. 

Being a police officer has taught me to be able to work with all kinds of people whether it be colleagues of different ranks, personalities, age, sex but also with victims of diverse crimes, perpetrators, witnesses; whom come from all different classes of society, old, young, the mentally ill and so forth.  

The NSW Police Force is a hierarchal organisation where management is of priority and importance in many aspects; 
working with those of senior rank to me, managing junior ranking officers, time management regarding paper work, management with victim/witness re efficient follow up, managing court work and also being proactive with the intention of preventing crime as well as being reactive to a criminal offence.

Being in a workforce that is unique to other work places, it can be mentally, emotionally frustrating and tough at times however it has caused a great immediate connection and understanding with many of my co-workers. One of the greatest things about this job are my co-workers; the support, the unity, the humour and the strong bond. 

Being apart of the NSW Police Force is a privilege and a wonderful career.

Every day is different.  You arrive and get changed into uniform.  Check yourself on the roster with the Supervisor.  Find out what jobs are outstanding and prioritise the most urgent jobs to attend to first.
Comraderi and being able to work well as a team is very important.  I have learnt how to communicate, negotiate and be diplomatic.  You learn to become very patient with troublesome customers and try to keep them calm and explain things as you go with whatever process you are performing.  Enjoyable part of the job is that every single station I have been attached to I have life-long friends.  It doesn't matter how long ago you last chatted you simply pick up from where you left off.

Working with Police or specific police units can be very rewarding as you play a very important role in providing intelligence support when police are involved in high risk operations.

Being involved in long term operations involving covert operations linked to large commercial supply of drugs. The intelligence support role is very important on a daily basis as well as providing long term strategic support.

The identification of suspects and then seeing those persons arrested and charged after a long period of investigation can be extremely rewarding, to both you personally and to the unit you have been supporting.

The hardest part of the job was initially convincing operational police that a civialian analyst can be a vital tool in the investigation process.

On a daily basis I would report to my supervisor to see which duty I would be allocated for that day. This would either be 'on the road' attending jobs, or working on the front counter, taking reports. 

I learnt, mostly how to remain impartial before making a final decision and look at all aspects of the situation before making a decision. I learnt how to allocate tasks, work within a team and follow instructions without supervision.

The hardest part of the job was working 12 hour shifts and during the night while still learning to apply the policing skills I learnt.

The most enjoyable part of the job was learning new knowledge and identifying criminal offences and charging these people with this offence. I also enjoyed the camaraderie.

•	Respond to and coordinating resources for emergency incidents, often unsupervised and leading junior staff.
•	Ability to work flexible hours and shift work whilst maintaining a standard of fitness to carry out my role.
•	Sound computer and administration skills, such as preparing briefs of evidence for court, case filing and telephone message pads.
•	A high level of customer service - through dealing with the public, answering telephone calls, attending station enquiries and follow-up with victims of crime - for which I have received an acknowledgment for good police work.
•	Strong communication skills with various people from diverse backgrounds.

Being a police officer can be the greatest job in the world. Unfortunately, NSW Police is the only organisation in NSW that employs police officers. Management is extremely toxic and will focus on the one mistake you make. There is no recognition for the good work that you put in everyday. No chance for personal development as any application will  be denied due to staffing shortages. Has been and unfortunately always will be a boys' club. 

Policing is an ever evolving vocation that has to stay in touch with the expectations of the community as well as the advancements with technology.
Notwithstanding the sometimes complex application of law enforcement, at the end of the day, common sense is the greatest asset a good police officer should have.

This was a challenging and extremely interesting job. Each dy is different. This kind of jobs requires you to be able to deal daily with people in the most difficult situations (Sometimes life threatening), deal with people who do not have good intentions, but the benefit of been able to help others in need satisfies the soul.

NSW Police Force BTS is a changing environment at present. However, the environment is friendly and the staff are welcoming.
