fuel filling of all dingies and barges, once over on all barge winches , shackles and anchors.. Load barges , secure ropes for towing of piles to tug once undertoe follow tug to point of transfer from tug to main crane to secure pile in gates for the commencement of hammering piles into place.... then the unloading of barge once  anchored and secured with tiger ropes around pre-exisisting piles using dingy to run inner ropes... hardest part was just weather depending but the best part was gaining the experience and accomplishing the jobs in areas which others just couldn't do , 
eg) In the pile transfer , once Tug was in place we had to release him to provent any danger of entanglement. By doing this we had a pre wrapped tiger rope at certain length from pre-exisiting pile so all we had to do was unshackle fom tug and attach to pre-rigged tiger rope ... Now tug is free from any danger.. I lower whip line of crane and secure in one of two set ups for the lifting of pile. once I secure first hook up , crane takes weight Not lift just takes weight so we can undo tiger rope.. once tiger rope off dingy driver takes me close to pile so I can jump from front of dinghy onto pile and once im on and dinghy is clear I take crane up so pile nose is about 3 to 4 metres outta water so I can release main valve , once valve is removed I lower crane back to holding point whilst lowering main hoist to position so I can rig main lifting point.. Once main attached I take weight till whip line becomes slack so I can undo.. Once undone I call in dingy driver where I then can jump back off pile onto front of dingy and when we clear I give whistle or radio signal to crane operator to commence lifting pile into gate where once in and locked depending on if it's last pile they'll start to hammer....

A Normal Day On The Tracks Was Basically Re-Sleeping The Tracks, Using Picaxes, Sledge Hammers, Dogging Poles, Drill Machines And Sleeper Removing Machines To Replacing The Old Worn Out Sleepers With New Sleepers So That The Tracks Will Be Much More Safer And Efficient For Trains To Ride One.

I Learn Always Be Ready And Cautious For Any Situation, There Is Only A Right Way And A Wrong Way To Do A Job, No Shortcuts.
Always Be Aware Of Your Surroundings And Make Sure Your Co-Workers Do To Since One Mistake Could Lead To Injury Or Even Death.
Everybody Comes To Work 'To Work', Any Other Event Can Wait After.

The Management Was Strict But For Safety Purposes, Made Sure Everyone Was Doing Their Part The Correct Way

The Co-Workers We're Really Helpful And Friendly, Can Always Rely On Them If Help Is Needed

The Part Of The Day Was The Long Walks On The Track, I Always Had To Make Sure I Was Up To Speed With Everyone Else Yet Manage To Keep My Body Hydrated And Full Of Energy So My Body Wouldn't Suffer From Fatigue.

The Easiest Part Of The Day Is When I Had Finished My Part Of The Job, I Would Go Back To Other Co-Workers And Give Them A Hand Making The Job Alot Quicker.

Thanks to John Holland Construction, I learned a lot and progressed because I had a very good manager who could see the overall scope of work. He had the knowledge and skills and relayed through his work to me. A very dedicated hard manager.
However, management above him did not have the same work experiences or the knowledge to drive the project. Due to their incompetence, the company was over budget every month. Management seems to provide their fictional monthly figures to CEO rather than the true budget.  Top management need to be scrutinise. They should provide CEO worst case scenario budget rather than fantasy best case scenario budgets. Top management seems to be working for self interest rather than Company's interests.

Day started with all management team having the days prestart an hour before the workers were given theirs in order to deliver the same message across all disciplines, then out to site to oversee the days tasks, coordinate labour, plant and materials for the men, attend daily briefings, to deliver days activities and milestones to management team.
Learned some good practises from the daily briefings to carry over to future projects.
Senior management were very professional and had time to listen to issues raised by supervision teams and act in a timely manner to address the issues.
Very good culture driven by management that flowed down to the workforce.
Hardest part of the job was being away from home for 21 days at a time
Most enjoyable part was helping deliver a quality project that was extremely difficult in terms of scale and being a one off, where many awards were given for ingenuity, safety and performance

My time at Hollands was spent mainly on a Dozer and Loader .. I have spent many years in both , but being my first civil job I had to learn a lot about the industry and ' termanology' as such . 
I enjoyed being home every night , and the roster was fair . The wages and benefits overall were great . I made a lot of friends close to home , and learnt another side of operating . It was a shame the contract came to an end so quickly ..hence my disappointment in the scoring .. 

I also found another side of the operating skills of my machines , and always have known you can learn something new all the time .I would love to get back out to this project , and would like to see it closer to the end if possible . If not I think it may be a great opportunity to change careers as such and learn something different

The management within the commercial team are not to be trusted. They are manipulative & feeble in managing the work. They absolutely have to control over the cost and zero understanding of D&C. Their only goal is to cut corners and save money on the job, being unfair to Subcontractors. Not to mention placing graduates and staff with no real qualification on the billion-dollar project just to save on $, (i,e family members without qualifications on the commercial team & site admin with experience on panel beating are put in charge of claims) and often promoted by the change of title to sweeten the deal at no extra pay.
Some contracted HR are terrible and have no sense of managing staff. Most are there for their own benefit.   it is a grat place to gain some experience but that is all its good for. 

John Holland gave me a range of working fields and environments in which to learn and grow as an engineer.

I learned skills from, procurement and tender management, programming skills in primavera, general management through to specific additional qualifications like protective coating & welding inspector certificates. 

I have enjoyed a great range of co-workers who have all helped me better understand my job and increase my learning in a range of areas. 

The hardest part of this job was probably the travelling and often isolated locations but often a point of growth related challenge as well. 


I enjoyed working with real professionals who really knew their job and taught me how to do things the right was the first way.

John Holland does not provide a good workplace for its staff, they need to hire the right people for the right job and provide the necessary support to reduce their losses every year.

Worked on the Alliance Management Team implementing safety programs and establishing best practice / innovations in safety in the delivery of the program including mentoring management / supervisors and the safety team of 6 subordinates ensuring positive safety results, culture and behavioural change.
The Priority Sewerage Program Alliance $150 million program was established to provide sewer reticulation, transfer, treatment and discharge schemes within un-sewered communities of Sydney which included the design, construction, testing and commissioning of plastic and metallic reticulation and transfer pipe work including new sewerage pumping stations of varying capacity and also upgrading existing sewage treatment plants and pumping stations.

a typical day at work in the pilbara for me starts at 4.30 am ready for a 6.am pre start to discuss the days activities and work load. as a serviceman on rail i could cover 600 klm in the day depending on where our guys were positioned,between Newman and pt Hedland,management were fantastic i was never questioned on where  i was heading for the day.the work crew,the guys working on track and on the track machines were all great to work with,the hardest part of the job was location,sometimes it was difficult to get to the machine and crews due to the isolation,the most enjoyable part of the job was the people and the landscape. the facilities were also very good, the day would finish at 6.pm.
