I applied here for a teaching job and was invited to a group interview with six other teachers. It felt like a competition, and only the three youngest teachers, including me, were offered the job.

I worked here for about six months without any issues or negative feedback from management. I thought I had a steady job, but then things took a strange turn.

The school had a system where teachers would submit their availability every four weeks, and then they'd get a tentative schedule a few days before the next session. Based on the latest schedule, I was supposed to teach in the next session, so I spent the weekend preparing lessons (which was mandatory, but teachers didn't get paid for it).

However, on Monday, the final schedule came out, and I didn’t get any teaching hours. I got an email saying it was due to "operational reasons."

I waited for another four weeks for the next session, submitted my availability again, and got the new schedule. But this time, I didn't get any teaching hours, and I didn't even get an explanation. Meanwhile, the school kept hiring new teachers.

Considering my years of teaching experience, both in Australia and overseas, this was  a disappointing experience. I’d never been ghosted by a workplace before.  I wouldn’t have turned down other job opportunities if I knew the job wasn’t secure.

Lessons are usually 4 hours. Lesson planning is part of the 4 hours, which means you do not get paid for lesson planning correctly. Most people are on a casual wage, meaning no security. Expect to work more hours when student numbers are up, and less hours (dramatically) when student numbers are down. This could be within a week’s time. You are constantly reminded you are a casual worker, which means you have no security. Also, the school provides limited chance of development. You can attend professional development, but after a few they seem to be very weak and basic. The school does not provide a chance for security.

The school is overran by new teachers per block. Most teachers are non native. There are a solid group of teachers (both native and non native) who are professional.
Some teachers think it’s okay to speak their first language to the students, and to treat students like friends. There seems to be a lack of professionalism.



My experience here was enough to realise this place doesn't care about your professional growth. No proper training given but they were good to put lots of pressure on results, they wanted me to train myself autonomously and after working hours without being paid a cent. They treat you like a robot that needs to deliver results only and big bosses don't care about if you have a health issue or any problem. I've never worked in an institution with such a level of disorganization and their expectations are super high for such little money they paid. I didn't learn anything positive. Nothing to enjoy about the admin job I was hired for. 

I worked at ILSC Sydney near Town Hall station, choice of evening or morning classes, afternoon classes were however limited. Even with only two years of teaching experience at the time, I was paid $90 an hour, which was extremely generous for the industry and my lack of experience. I also received extra pay for marking outside work hours, bonus payments when students gave positive feedback, which made me feel valued for my work. Free coffee from ILSC barista cafe classes too! The only thing I found tricky was the four-week course cycles as you would new set of students and  change classrooms, but I got used to it.

Lack of transparency, inconsistency, lack of acknowledgement.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment was once collaborative and productive but has gradually declined.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Teaching the students is the best part of the job. Inte raction with the management certainly takes the shine off your working day. Never providing any positive feedback but constantly criticizing and exacerbating the smallest detail into some major catastrophe.

Colleagues, students, classes, and Activities

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Overworked underpaid, lack of recognition and reward for successes.  Very little chance  for career progression

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly and collaborative.  Very fun place to work

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Non-stop, overworked, always doing things outside of contract

As far as the ESL market in Sydney goes, this school is probably better than the average private enterprise. Some of the hiring practices towards a casualised and itinerant workforce do not help. The facilities are new and certainly impress. The vibe in the staffroom and in meetings is not great. The worst is that you find people in managerial positions acting in highly unprofessional ways. It was not evident to me at all that anyone there was actually happy doing their jobs...

I greatly enjoyed the majority of my time there. Management were friendly, the culture seemed relaxed and there was always someone you could ask about any questions you had. People worked together and supported each other. The student body came from many countries and had many different experiences to share.

The place have a nice working environment and good culture. The manager's really try to take care of the staff and keep them happy. The training process was really precise/ well-planed  and my team at the time was very supportive. 

Overall, I had a great experience working for ILSC and I learned so many things

I really enjoyed working at ILSC.  The managers were lovely people who supported you as well as  cared about you. There was room for professional growth and overall it was a great place to work and teach.
