Hungry Jacks

Do NOT work here EVER. My experience at this store has been dreadful. 80% of managers actively seek out things to yell at employees for, and if they're not doing that they're sitting on their phones in their office doing nothing. You are required to do, from memory, 10 or 15 hours of online unpaid modules before being allowed to begin actual work. Working at the store's front counter (for minimum wage, and no I am not in the least bit exaggerating here) involved simultaneously taking orders, cooking fries, making desserts, making drinks, cleaning the front counter down, refilling all the various food items at the front from the storehouse, packing orders together, serving orders, dealing with outright rude, inebriated or high customers and also cleaning the store and toilets (which were filthy), ON ONE'S OWN. For shifts that were upwards of 6 hours with one break. Managers even asked me to take over other people's shifts during school hours and then got angry that I wasn't free! Only very rarely did managers help out during the peak times of work, and even then they did so very reluctantly and were very frustrated for being disturbed. The stress of the job made many employees quit within weeks, and made me, who was barely above the minimum working age at the time, cry on a weekly basis from the unrelenting experience. I dearly hope this isn't the same for other hungry jacks stores, but if it is then never go to another one of those franchises again. 0/10, if negative numbers are allowed it'd be -10/10

I am just a normal crew worker working at Hungry jacks as a casual worker. Nothing rare happened unlike today. I never had any trouble working at Hungry jacks before and I always felt so happy to work there until. Tonight when I was working a shift from 5pm ~ 9pm I was serving customers on the cashier like usual and after a while I felt everything started to go really intense and I felt like I was doing all the work and other crew workers didn't do anything. Since I was on the cashier already serving I had to do other things, that the other workers should do, they started to telling me to change the bin, wipe the tables, mop the floor and it was normal, because a job like this you have to clean and etc. But how no one was sharing the job equally, and I was the only person doing it the whole time. It seemed like everyone was taking a advantage of me to clean and do things. After I finished work and about to leave. My boss (manager) told me to stop as he started to count the money In the cashier. That is also normal because you have to check the money before anyone leaves.  But what made it bad and heart breaking for me was that he made me had a panic attack saying that there are some money missing. His voice was loud and it embarrassed me infront of other people. It made me angry because it sounded like he think I stole the money or sometime. He could of check the cameras and there are other crew workers who were using the same cashier before me. So I honestly don't know why would I be the one who get yelled at in the very end. He gave me a warning. But I find this very unfair. Because I was the last one who was working as a cashier, it was also late and everyone has problems in life, I'm a sensitive person 
which made me break down when i arrive home feeling really sad that i got blamed while there were other people before me who also used the same cashier. While he said because it was under my name I had to take full on responsibly. Although that would of been normal for him to be mad. But there are still no right for the manager to embarrass and yell at a crew worker for something you CAN'T be so SURE about and make them feel guilty for something they didn't do or a misunderstanding.

Day shift is a 4am/5am start. Myself and my crew prepare front and back area for a 6am start. Working in fast food is very busy and we are always on our feet. There's never nothing to do. As a manager I assist front counter and drive through with there orders and motivate the back crew to obtain a good speed of service. Iv learnt how to:

* Providing good Customer Service
* Meet sales/ budget target
* Rostering manager
* Counting tills
* Conducting meeting
* Monitoring crew training
* Manage a good speed of service
* Organising stock
* Administering payrolls
* Recruiting new staff
* Training workers
* Handling customer complaints & queries
* Ensure standards of hygiene is maintained

Our management team can have there good and bad days. We work as a team to try to give our store excellent customer service, quick speed of service and friendly team to make the customers feel valued.

Our staff are trained by myself and sometimes management. The crew are very respectful to myself and  I value my staff. They welcome the customers and remain attentive while placing their orders. They are trained to be friendly, respectful and courteous to each other and customers. 

The hardest part of my job is the early and late hours. At times I start work at 5am even 4am in the morning. The shifts are quite long hours and I get exhausted. The late hours include finishing at 12am and then there is overnight shifts. I work weekends and public holidays and on many occasions when managers can not make there shift I do a double or triple shifts. One time I even did 4 shifts in a row adding up to 32 hours straight. My body clock is a mess and I'm always on my feet.

I love my job majority of the time. I'm highly motivated and love facing challenges. I love the crew I work with as they as they listen to any instructions they are given. Without they the business would collapse so I respect them. At the end of the day I love seeing the daily average results. There's a lot I love about hungry jacks and I enjoy working there. The pay at Hungry jacks is good.

I've been working as a crew member with Hungry Jack's since 2016. At the start, I loved working there and it was fantastic! I was getting paid well for a 15-17 year old and everyone was amazing and understanding.
Recently, all that has changed.
The company is trying everything to cut costs and keep them low. They'll only hire and roster 15 or 16 year olds because they're cheap, they'll tell the front staff not to use large paper bags because apparently it's too expensive for the company, and they want crew members to clock out within 2 minutes of finishing their shift even though we're allowed a 5 minutes grace period. Also, they only pay a 50 cent laundry allowance when the Fast Food Award states that it should be $1.26 per shift.
As for the older employees, they'll slowly cut down their shifts until they get nothing! I used to have at least two shifts per week. Then that was cut down to one shift per week, then it was cut down to one 5 hour shift. How is a 19 year old uni student supposed to pay bills and utilities and still have enough money left over for the long term!? Now my shifts have been totally cut and I have to conserve whatever money I've got in my bank account and sponge off mum for petrol!
My boyfriend is a manager for the company and they're also treating him poorly, with rostering, improper pay and the lack of consideration for his wellbeing and life outside of work being the main issues. I have been running these issues past FairWork Australia and the Fast Food Award and I'm seeing so many violations of law. I'm urging him to get out of there as soon as possible.
It's clear to see that Hungry Jack's just don't know how to treat loyal and hardworking employees anymore. They've become so money-hungry, greedy and inconsiderate! 
If you're considering getting a job with Hungry Jack's, I've got one thing to say to you; run far away from the company!

The most enjoyable parts of the work is meeting new people and an having a connection grow between them an yourself.

A typical day at work is busy during dinner time, lunch time and if there is a football game on in Ammi stadium. Most of the days are slow but we would get continued service on others so it would depend on what day and time your are sign on for.

I have learnt to work with others within a fast working environment, I learnt how to clean simple things from the floors and the boards we all work upon too taking a part a boiler which cooks our product an detail clean it. The sore room showed me how to lift correctly, rotate products upon storage and organization with multiple items. The fridge, freezer and the burger room has taught me how to work in different temperature environments and shown me the hazards within each. I have learnt to mange my speed while working fast when needed while calm the next while cleaning.

The co-workers have there own way of doing their jobs they are given,  however most lack the focus, education, experience to allow them to continue to work continually for long periods of time, which in the end causes a distraction to the whole area and possibly giving us a bad image to our customers.

Management differ from manger to manger some focus on the work, other are laid back and don't mind if our work goes slow and others stress over many things but have no control over their workers.

The hardest part about the job is being a senior employee because even the mangers rely upon me and most of the time see it as a way to get rid of some of their work within the area that I might be working it and because of my age a barely get a lot of shifts an no public holidays for more than a year now all because I cost too much instead they deal with multiple younger workers with less experience which harms their production speed.

Never boring as we got to interact with many different people and cultures as well as it was high paced, always learning, jovial and interesting.
Q2) What you learned:
I learned excellent customer service skills, patience, social intelligence, management roles, leadership, safety first at all times, duty of care, cash handling, hospitality skills, retail skills, WHO &S skills, cooking skills, presentation of self and food, time management, working with technical equipment. .
Q3) Management:
Safety representative, training paid for by Hungry Jacks, crew training,managing alone on the graveyard shift, directing team members; I was offered to undergo a paid by the company trainee-ship in management. Unfortunately, I was forced to turn it down as I had to return to Rockhampton from the Gold Coast due to a family member having a chronic illness.
Q4) Workplace Culture:
Excellent communication between all team members and management, both talking and listening as well as respecting every-ones different cultural beliefs and points of view. It is a pro-active, productive and enjoyable work environment. We are rewarded and encouraged to perform to our best ability in our best area/field of work.
Q5) The hardest part of the job:
Nothing really for me as I believe in and love learning new things and mastering them to a high standard.
Q6) The most enjoyable part of the job:
Meeting new people, making life-long friends and being given the chance to learn new things and the encouragement given to me by team members and management. I also enjoyed the benefits such as discounts on food and free food.

It SUCKS 

Worked for nearly 3 years and I was there best drive thru person. Did all the closes, regularly was left by myself on drive thru after 8pm to cut down on labour. Never used to know what shifts ypu would get but they recently changed their award so its all contract now and MUCH harder to get time off and fill other peopls shifts if its not in your "availability". 

Never fire ANYONE. Reguarly had people that did absolutely nothing and still wouldnt get fired. People stole money from tills still didnt get fired. One person was drunk on the job for months before they fired him. 

Crew can be nice. I made a few friends. Theres heappppsss of drama between crew and managers. Lots of yelling, high stress. 

You're working with mainly 15/16 and some of them are not smart at all or cut out for this work
 
Managers take you for granted, grind the good crew down to the bone while let the lazy crew do nothing. Someone used to do a saturday 5pm-2am shift then come in for an 11am-4pm shift on Sunday. They're constantly running out of overnight crew. Heaps of crew call in sick drop of a hat and never get in trouble. Had one crew not show up to her shifts every weekend for two months and only had a talking to! But if you are $1 over the variance limit for money you get a written warning. 

Customers are a nightmare, yelling at you for someone elses mistake, stealing food, throwing stuff, being drunk or high, being entitled, yelling, (one hit my manager). Upset when we run out of stock or frozen, coffee, ice cream  machine is down (You're not the only customer the machines run 24/7 they break down or need cleaning) 

I hated it for my whole 3 years. Only liked venting my frustrations and ranting about customers to my crew members. 

If u need a job sure, but only like a 1 or 2 max. Dont become a manager or you are stuck there forever!!!

A typical day at work, can be fun. I love cleaning the store and changing swab buckets and bins, even though everyone usually hates the dirty jobs. Serving customers is fun and can be interesting when they tell you about themselves and their families, i like making fries and packing the bags, and making ice creams and drinks the only downside is the peak hours. in this time the managers can get mean and sometimes cannot control they're actions, sometimes with mean words and imidation. but that is a high intensity environment for you, you never know a person until you see them under stress. My management team has taught me to always be courteous towards staff and it will always be returned. The better the staff are treated especially during peak times, the better for the store and the smoother it runs. The store depends on a balance of hard work both individual and as a team with a combination of controlled tempers and good customer service. My co-workers are the ones who have made this job fun and bearable through the worst times. they are an amazing team and know how to create a fun and easy work environment in which I can personally thrive. The hardest part of the job is certainly the abuse, from customers and sometimes your team. Unruly customers who yell at staff and call names and laugh make the job the hardest because you still have to smile and be polite through the dehumanization they are putting you through and the humiliation can be painful, The most enjoyable part of the job is certainly when a peak period ends and there is two minutes when everyone can breathe and regain their composure and relax, this is when we see if each other is alright and we make sure everyone is okay and can last until the end of their shift because our team is amazing.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Understaffed and excessive workload for the pay/role, unprofessional environment, unfair hiring and shifts ( managers biased on who they like/are related to), will talk to crew on shifts if they’re friends and do nothing productive but if you’re a trainee or someone they’re not friends with they will overload you with work mostly. will not provide much support if you’re regular crew needing more hours, no understanding, manipulative and will bribe and take advantage of good workers while doing nothing about unfair workload as-long as it’s not their problem 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unprofessional, unfair, hiring relatives over more suitable candidates, shaming employees who have not had enough attention in training because of understaffing, blaming and deflecting responsibilities, will pretend to understand and care when you talk to them but will do nothing to help solve ongoing issues. Male dominated, feels like manager vs staff situation. More of a threatening to force improvement ie managers lessening hours, shaming and talking down to crew when they make mistakes, complaining about things rather than a supporting to be better situation. Only value employees who do everything they’re asked and more overexerting themselves, revolve their life around work and keep their mouth shut 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Exhausting and frustrating, no protection from creeps or aggressive customers, still served as managers want all the sales possible. No hearing out about understaffing just ignoring or gaslighting and blaming

I worked as a night time clean up crew member in both a 24hr store as well as a non-24hr store. Working at a non-24hr store as a clean up person is increadibly hard work.

I would recommend avoid becoming a Team Leader or H&S Team Member if you can't afford extra putting in extra responsibilities. From the time I was employed, I was not afforded any additional benefits for taking up the extra responsibilities that come with the H&S and Team Leader positions. No pay rise. Not really worth it unless you want the title change for your resume, or you are looking to seek a promotion to management staff.

In general, the workplace can be very stressful. It varies from store to store. Management are constantly pushing for high work efforts so they can try to cut even hours, and if you are working at a non-24hr store it can get incredibly stressful. THEY ARE ALWAYS LOOKING TO CUT HOURS. ALWAYS. Over my years of employment, ~20-30% of my shifts at one store were understaffed. Meaning that I had to constantly work harder and faster to simply leave on time. Especially since I almost always rostered on with female managers, who would either refuse or were incapable of assisting in the higher-labour jobs.

Your enjoyment in any position at Hungry Jacks will rely heavily on how you form relationships with other staff members. If you can make friends with others, you will be capable of enjoying a position at Hungry Jacks. If you can't make such a relations, you can struggle to find enjoyment.

As a first job, its fine. Though i would recommend working in different fields if possible. Franchise or local convenient stores, supermarkets or general retail positions will be a far more enjoyable experience.
