Helping Hand Aged Care

Worked at HH for 2 years- worked previously as volunteer- before starting in hotel services department. 

Working with older people is truly rewarding everyday! you  have  to have patience, and empathy in this job in any area you work in.

I loved working at HH for majority of my time there- although felt burnout during my last few months during COVID-19 pandemic when we had constant mini lockdowns of floors and wings to keep the residents safe- it was understandable why- although times communication lacked greatly within management to all staff during this time, including public holidays and weekends with no leaders to help take control of compliance of everyone’s duties. Standards of work felt too much constantly as a person who cleaned rooms and made and served food, and saw the struggles of other staff and carers. I know now this is a country wide problem of the aged care crisis.  too much work- too little staff- little resources and time put in- in my last few months I saw also the burnout of carers who forgot simple things for the residents - but knowing there is no time for them and there is a constant amount of work to be done - factory line of residents they must clean feed etc



A typical day involved triaging and prioritizing technological and business issues that arose, sometimes with little notice and often due to outside forces such as government regulations/changes to State and Federal Aged Care funding systems.  
The work often required flexibility and the ability to work independently, critically, creatively and liaise effectively with internal and external business, government and technical stakeholders; providing robust database solutions to meet business needs within budget and on time.  
The most challenging aspect was uncovering the extent and detail of change required as often the level of detail required for complex software systems was not fully realized by the change initiator. However, the solution development aspect was very enjoyable; particularly as stakeholders began to to see their requirements realised in a modern user-friendly manner.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I did a 3 week placement at Helping Hand Adelaide in 2017.
They wete willing to take on recent graduates of Cert lll in Aged Care and give them training (buddy system). The facility and standards were very high and on completing the 3 weeks they offered me a job.
Win, win !

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Iat first l was concerned because the place and residents were all new to me, but that soon ironed out and the placement gave me good confidence at the aged care individual support role

Excellent, they worked as a team

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very good exercise !! One is more efficient when well organised. 
Showers, get residents to breakfast, make beds, provide particular duties for individuals as needed etc

the independance and nature of the position
supportive managers and staff
no pressure 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
too much emotional things is put on me at times im not a psychologist and dont get paid as one.
some times the work load is too much for the time and some homes are not very hygienic

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
really good excellent communication and policies

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Good read the care plan and make sure i am aware of these before entering a clients home. small chat and attending to the services of clients needs according to plan. if any hazards i make sure they are noted.

I worked from 8.45am to 3.15pm so I could drop and pick up my daughter from school. Work day was varied but mainly consisted of data entry, taking phone calls, filing, photocopying, and any admin work required. Management was reasonable and co-workers great. Other admin mostly good workers and good support. As always some people who don't hold up their end of the work load. Hardest part of the job was telling clients that we couldn't offer services due to their location or wait lists etc. The most enjoyable part was having a laugh with co-workers and finishing something completely and getting that sense of achievement.

Loved this job in the 4 x months I was there but was basically run out of the job due to bullying tactics by my immediate Manager, who is still there.  Complaint has been registered and others know this is going on but they are still there and I have had to leave.  Very hard having to do that but I have now found a wonderful job in a far better, caring environment with a Company that obviously don't lie in their adverts about how the work culture is at their Company......

Was promised 40+hours per week. After 6 months was still only getting 15-20. Management failed to do anything about it after repeatedly being informed of the issue. When I resigned my immediate bosses were incredibly rude and unprofessional.  After I left i learnt that only three new jobs come through a month and after they had been divided between the thirty odd gardening staff it could take from a year at least to accrue a fulltime workload.

The flexibility and relaxed approach to everything we done getting your job done with people in a great environment

Troublesome budgets the money isn’t always available to do what you want to improve

Really good all working together to make it happen

You are basically a cleaner, all the things you do at home is what I do at work, cook and clean, The staff are great and are all  good friends . The work is hard and fast so you need to be fit. The most rewarding part about this job is the residents. The things I learn at work, is to appreciate life in its self, and to give the respect very human person deserves

High staff turn over.  Employees and Employers  are quick to point mistakes out but do not recognise you achievements unless You  point of it yourselves. Not very accommodating for staff with medical issues and / or  disabilities.
