Dusk

Dusk is a terribly run company, from a customers stand point - It seems like the perfect place to work. It seems like an easy job thats loads of fun, selling pretty candles. How incorrect this assumption is. The management (on every level) is absolutely awful. Running all their employees into the ground both physically and mentally with, absolutely ridciulous and completey unachieveable KPI's and task lists. No consideration for their employees whatsoever. If you are looking for great work life balance, dusk isn't the place for you. You will be expected to work well beyond your contracted hours (unpaid) and punished if you refuse or simply cannot do it. Casuals are offered roughly three hours a week (if they are lucky). Your daily, weekly and monthly KPI's will be non-negotiable and if you don't achieve them, expect to be made to feel worthless and incompetent. If you are looking for a company that respects you as a team member or simply, a person, Dusk is not the place to work. As a Store Manager myself, I had so many of my team members (from both my store and other stores) leave because of how terribly they were treated. Team members often crying before work, during work and after work because of the stress and bullying they endured from management. HR are incredibly inconsiderate, hold no people skills and are completly biased towards management. There is little to no career progression with Dusk and, you pretty much need to be a yes man to get even the slightest bit of praise. In store training is non-existent, no guidance is offered to team members so, if mistakes are made you must take "full accountability" even if you haven't been trained in that area. If you aren't the "favourite" of the moment, you are disposable to all higher management. They take no complaints or issues reported seriously. I genuinely would never ever recommend Dusk as a place to work nor a place to shop.

Turn up at work at least 30 minutes to be able to review any work training and updates, 100% customer focus from the get go. Completely meeting customer needs and giving full product solutions to enhance a great customer experience/ customer base. 
Offer promotional deals, add on's to allow customer to get the best our of their products, as well as achieving personal/company KPI's. Complete any VES (Visual merchandising) changes in an effective and timely manner. Take out basic tasks daily banking, rubbish runs, sweep and clean etc. Review daily results and justifying why they are how they are/ do they need improvement/ and how can I improve.

I've learned that confidence can truly do wonders, with that you can achieve the skys limits. In retail terms: great customer base, great results (KPI's). 

We have great management support. Thorough training in order to achieve the best results. Supportive and to the point where need be. 

Co-workers are all hard workers and are all their to do their job. Ideally to make sure customers are walking away with the best customer experience and meeting KPI's by End of the day. 

The hardest part of the job is trying to upsell or add on products to their solutions without being too pushy. However there are other way's around this. 

Most enjoyable part of my job is definitely meeting customer needs, making sure they receive their full product solution. What makes it all worth it, is getting acknowledged for helping and taking the time to meet all needs and have them be so very appreciative and giving great reviews.

I worked at dusk for 5 years. At first, it was great when I started as a casual, but becoming a Store Manager completely changed my experience. It became exhausting and honestly one of the most draining jobs I’ve had.
The company expects you to work overtime...unpaid! If you don’t stay back and work extra hours for free, your store falls behind, yet upper management still expects everything to look perfect at all times. It’s impossible to maintain standards, stay within rostered hours, manage customers, banking, breaks, stock, and training all in one shift. 
Staffing was also terrible. Most shifts I was left alone for hours, with one casual working a 3-hour shift. On top of that, you’re expected to properly train staff who might only work once every couple of weeks. Realistically, after breaks and daily tasks, you barely get any actual training time with them.
Support from higher-ups was minimal. The back rooms were constantly overflowing with unsold or unusable stock, signage changes were chaotic, and promos would constantly change overnight. We’d print 50+ pages of signage on A4 paper just to replace it again the next day and then hoard old signage “just in case” it got reused later. The workload, lack of support, unrealistic expectations, and poor management culture made the environment extremely stressful. If you value your efforts and time, DO NOT work here. 

I worked as a Christmas casual at Dusk and was glad I didn’t stay on as a casual throughout the rest of the year. The overall vibe of the workplace was so depressing. No one even seamed like they really wanted to be there (neither did I). 

The smell and strong SCENTS were so TERRIBLE for my health. I did not have any medical conditions or respiratory/asthma issues before working there. The first shift onwards, I felt like I couldn’t breathe, was constantly thirsty and would have to go into the back room just to clear my throat. I ended up getting quite sick. It was really unreasonable for them to put all the diffusers on at once, to the point I couldn’t even talk to customers in that area of the store because it was too much. 
It simply wasn’t worth working there. On top of feeling terrible, the targets were so high. Even though I was constantly asking for feedback and being on top of my improvement, nothing seamed to be enough. I also felt really terrible convincing people to purchase items I didn’t think was worth buying. 
This was my first paid job, so maybe someone with more experience (and strong lungs) could handle it, but honestly it was just a bad experience.

Working at dusk has been the most pointless time of my life. Store management is unprofessional and inefficient, with rules being made up outside the bounds of workers rights to appeal to store managers laziness. 
While working in the store itself is fine, albeit monotonous, the culture engrained in the store is that of ‘family’. But don’t be fooled, it’s not the type of family you want over for Christmas, more like that uncle you wish was more estranged. 
Duties are everything from putting candles on shelves to mopping floors all the way to putting more candles on shelves, making this the most boring job I have ever had. 
Human Resources department is just as useless as any other HR department. When approached with an issue everything that I had said was ignored to the point that they asked me to do exactly what I had very clearly stated I had already done, missing the point entirely. 
Here’s my advice - 
Don’t work for this company.
If you are working for this company join a union. 
Complain about bad management and coworkers when you need to. 
Study up on your entitlements and workers rights. 
Lastly, never feel any sort of obligation to this company, or any other company, they need you more than you need them and don’t let them forget it. 


This was honestly a waste of of almost 3years,, the only training you get is online which is always out of date. If you do not meet ALL of your KPI’s even just 1 then you need to explain why, which if everyone knew why they would be making all KPI’s. You are expected to sell so many $15 lighters and $10 rewards each shift which even the best sales person can struggle with this. If you do not meet your requirements then the next weeks following shifts can be stripped from you until you prove yourself. The state managers come into store and disrespectfully talk down about team members calling them a waste of space and critising even store managers. You as a casual can be very lucky to get 3hrs a week unless someone is away or sick then u are expected to take on each shift followed by being cut down when you are not needed. I believe you can NOT go anywhere within this company unless you are happy with minimum shifts and are a yes sir no sir type of person. If you are not the state managers favourite person I store you really have no chance they will cut your shifts to get rid of you rather than providing feedback. The positive is that you can meet some great team within the store but it does depend which store you are in.

I was hired on for Christmas with a “guaranteed” position afterwards (obviously that didn't happen, they let me go Christmas Eve). 

Training was mostly online and there was A LOT. In store, they mostly observed and then corrected when mistakes were made. It was my first retail job after years in hospitality so I did have transferrable skills and knowledge that helped. 

Management was… half and half. General Manager was amazing, patient, but firm. Assistant manager? Rude, abrupt, quick to anger, and had meltdowns kind of often. So I dreaded days where I was on with the AM. I met the Area Manager a couple times, they were firm, a little rude in tone but helped out on the floor when they were there.

Helping customers was good! I loved the products so not hard to sell. Huge emphasis on upselling and it was quite competitive on who was doing the best and selling the most, which got quite stressing. 

I ended up getting upwards of 35+ hours a week from Halloween to my leaving on Christmas Eve. Stressful with all the deliveries at 5-5:30am. 

Working at Dusk is very enjoyable, never dread coming to work. The team all get along great and there's a great culture. It's always okay if you don't get something right away, and while they do track KPI's, if you're below targets, it's never the end of the world so long as you are trying to improve them. Depending on the size of the team, you can get a decent number of shifts. In terms of career advancement, this depends on whether the current managers will be moving on anytime soon, generally though there is always oppertunities for advancement. It's a simple enough job in terms of what you need to do and understand, there can be a big rush especially around holidays, but they always make sure there's enough staff on to manage that so you're not overworked. Also great culture in regards to breaks, everyone must take there break and there is never any shame in taking/needing your 10 min rest break. Management are also very nice and never treat you as inferior.

Unrealistic expectations, upper management do not care show no empathy kindness and give no support, kpis are absolutely drilled into you daily, wins are hardly celebrated yet if you do not achieve their unrealistic targets you are constantly contacted. The company is very unorganised, communication is terrible and lacking immensely, upper management seem to not live or follow the company values, lots of unpaid overtime  if you want your store and team to run smoothly, stress and exhaustion from being over worked, constant promo and ves changes, stock management and deliveries are horrendous, no work life balance, massive workloads that burn you out regularly, selling  candles is not worth your mental health and dignity. Do not work here

I do not recommend any person apply for Dusk as a Christmas Casual. Dusk is all sales based so If you don't know how to sell they will not give you any shifts, no proper training is given and expect you to know the knowledge of a person that has been there for 2-3 years. High turnover of staff because they give you one chance to prove yourself sales wise and If you don't meet their KPI they will give you no shifts and they will ghost you. The boss is passive aggressive and only cares about hitting the store's KPI. It's not a team working Environment as other staff need to hit their sales targets and will take yours if it means hitting their own.
