As a graduate at the Department of Health, I was given the opportunity to work across three different sections of the organisation. My work in each of these sections varied greatly. However, a typical day at the office in my last rotation involved arriving to work early to review all relevant media pertaining to general practitioners in rural and remote Australia. Any negative publicity on this subject would be flagged to the Directors for further investigation.  

Following this, our team would meet to discuss our priorities for the week, divide tasks, and discuss any important issues. It is important to note that given this dynamic working environment, priorities during the week often changed, therefore it was important we kept each other inform of our progress on current tasks and the emergence of new tasks. Although we were considered to be a team, often we would divide tasks up and work autonomously to complete these tasks before we met again to discuss what's next on the list.

Following our meeting, it was straight into work. Monday mornings were always busy. Our team had two Directors which job shared so it was important on Mondays that we updated our Director of what we had been working on at the end of the previous week and where we were at with everything.

General tasks for the day often included analysing, summarising or evaluating reports, liaising with stakeholders on progress/issues in programs, collaborating in ministerial correspondence, writing letters and minutes, preparing briefs for senior executive staff, answering telephones, and drafting emails for the Assistant Secretary.

The most enjoyable part of this job was working with such a fantastic team, Supervisor, and Directors. Everyone was so supportive of one another, helped each other out when some of us had more or less work on then others. The Postgraduate Training Section was a positive working environment as well.

The hardest part of this job was the fact that it was located in Canberra. Being away from my family and friends was particularly challenging. Additionally in one section I worked in the hierarchical nature was really strong. This was difficult at times. I understand the importance of respecting supervisors and senior executive staff, but at the same time believe that all staff should be treated equally, and no one should be looked down upon.

A typical day at work was spending all day assisting parents to support their children. I worked in a team environment and always achieved personal KPIs and also contributed to the team's KPIs.

Complex financial investigation. In my interactions with both clients and co-workers, I learned to appreciate and respect every individual regardless of their situation or background and to treat them with tact and empathy .

Management was supportive.

I enjoyed the comradship of my co-workers and made many friends in each area I worked.

The most challenging part of this role was dealing with very stressed and often angry clients.

Maintenance of all accounts, draw downs, MYOB invoices and purchase orders, collate monthly stats for sites monthly budget, petty cash, receiving and directing calls, client appointments and walk ins, reminder calls for job seekers appointments and make follow up appointments, file auditing, prepare training manuals for internal courses, meeting minutes, archives, prepare and post mail, filing, stationery orders, maintenance of equipment – fax machine, photocopier, computers, scanner etc., other duties as directed and maintaining an efficient and friendly office environment

Perks are free parking, but GGs pay a lot lower than most offer government roles I've worked in. 

Get some opportunities to see cool things and meet people. 

a lot of people stagnate there and stay in the same position for years! not much career progression only a small agency and people get comfortable. 

The lower APS Staff are treated like humble peasants and servants. 

Working in the Environment Department of the Australian government allowed me to interface with some very important work that has considerable potential to influence Australia's environment. Decent pay, good work-life balance, some gifted colleagues and some peculiar high level decision making at times. 

Really great team environment, 
Leadership is fantastic and the work is engaging with many opertunities to learn new and emerging technology and cyber threats.
The SOC environment is incredibly well managed and set up. 
Overall an amazing place to work.

Great work environment. The company was willing to help in any way. Great opportunities within this company. They are very professional and reward their employees very generously. Free dental and eye care as well.

My day of work at Groovin the Moo was volunteer work, I must say I did enjoy it. I got to meet some cool people which made the work much easier to settle into. It gave me help in the skill of customer service.

You will need thick skin to work with DHS, its not for the faint hearted. Australian government are on their own agenda, and have no idea how to implement, integrate projects. Little respect those that are trying.
