A typical day at work was basically getting into work around 8am then once our Keyworkers allocated clients to us we would then call each client that we had for the day (up to 4 clients per day) and arrange with them what time we would or should come. We would then check the diary to see of any appointments with them and such. Grab their medication and money/cheques if we were taking them shopping. Typically we would be out for most of the day.

I learned alot working with Exceptional Needs and it was slightly different to my last job at The Salvation Army as in this job I was a Community Support Worker where I was out there in the Community every day including weekends. Where as my job role in Salvation Army was more Case Management so I was for the most part in the office. So being around these clients day in day out for the day, I was always learning new things.

Management and my co workers were all dedicated and caring people. It was a real pleasure working with each and every one of them as they all brought something different so I was always learning new things from them as well. If i had a query of some sort, there was always someone to help me out. I loved going to work.

The hardest part of this job was when we were  in a scary situation with clients that suffered with poor mental health. This was hard because no matter how much you wanted to help them and let them know that we were there to help, they just couldnt see it. At times we were abused and many threats made towards us but i really appreciated our "no retreat" policy because no matter what we always went back, which at most times made them realize that we really did care. It was very difficult to see them suffering with such bad mental health and feeling helpless.

The most enjoyable part of the job was when we would be involved in success stories. It may just be someone didnt go to gaol or another person got to visit their children or someone moving into their new home. It was a pleasure to be involved in and being there supporting them in that moment of happiness for them. To know that you made someone laugh or smile was a good enough reason for me to get out of bed and go to work knowing that there was every possibility that that would happen again.

I enjoyed working at AnglicareSA Grange for the most part, but was prohibited from caring for the residents up to a standard I (and as it turns out the government - accreditation) found acceptable. This was due to a strong emphasis by management on cutting costs wherever possible. When management were confronted about this they would blame upper management and "the industry" rather than try to work out solutions to unacceptable problems. They'd even blame the residents, suggesting certain residents were known for making things up (despite all evidence to suggest they were telling the truth).

Cutting costs means cutting staff. When staff/carers are cut, standards drop dramatically as it's simply not possible to keep up. This means that things soon spiral out of control. 
For example, the carers might not have time to toilet the resident properly and so the resident then might as a consequence use more continence pads. The managers will then complain that carers are using too many continence pads, making the decision to lock the spare pads up. Carers are then held up having to go find a nurse to unlock the room with the spare pads (and sign off on getting an extra pad). This leads to the carer either deciding that "the pad isn't that bad, we'll leave it on" or the extra time spent doing the right thing resulting in other residents not having their care needs met in a timely manner. That's one example.. but when an entire facility is run like that it's best to move on.

Assisting clients to secure or maintain housing. 
Liaising with various organisations daily to assist with emergency accommodation when required. Attending scheduled and unscheduled home visits. Keep concise case notes. Attend meetings with or on behalf of clients.

I learnt a lot in this position. Mainly about the importance of empowering others to give them the tools required to lead more secure lives. I also gained a lot of knowledge around different cultures and to respect these differences while being able to assist in combining these beliefs and expectations to enable the stability around housing issues. 

Support from management was paramount within our team. I held management in high regard due to their support with complex issues that often arose.

The most difficult part of the job was seeking the appropriate services for individual clients. With an increase in demand this became very challenging. 

Positive outcomes were the most rewarding parts of the job. Small achievements were always celebrated.

would not recommend working for Anglicare WA. Questionable managers in the corporate offices who give no support to staff. The hardest part of the job is knowing that there are so many things that are fundamentally wrong which has caused the organization to be continuously audited independently. The organization recently introduced a new process and failed at providing proper and sufficient training to all staff which caused alot of frustration and confusion. There is a lack of urgency with government grants and legally binding contracts with other state government department. Also, the introduction of the new system has caused a hold up in payroll and a large number of staff either got severely overpaid/underpaid. 

The lack of communication can be seen across the board. If you prefer a slow laid back NPO type job with no room for growth this would be ideal. However, be prepared as most of the mid to senior managers in the corporate office offer no communication and no direction/guidance.

Hit the day running, sick leave to be filled, database information to be updated, next roster to be produced, staff resigning, new staff coming in, phone call enquiries and people coming in to ask questions, maternity leave and annual leave schedules. Another day filled with challengers that were all achieved.


Management supportive but game direction changing constantly due to the changing times in  Aged care.


Culture of the staff was great as staff willing to assist, come in on their day off to keep residents well cared for. Happy and friendly.


The deaths in the work place from the residents were difficult but part of why they were getting the best possible care and dignity but the loss of staff members was always a very hard day at work but all worked together to get through it.


Seeing the staff flourish as they learn and achieve new skills and the day they pop in with their new baby as new part of the family culture.

Working as an assistant to the person in charge of the Foster Care programs, including recruitment of Foster Parents, training and support to foster care parents and marketing and media promotions of foster care programs. This work was interesting and varied.
I enjoyed working with the staff and found them always willing to help with internal policy regarding client privacy and other information and felt included and accepted in my role.

The hardest part of this job was updating and preparing educational training manuals for potential foster parents. Each manual was hundreds of pages and we needed to produce and bind up to 20 manuals at a time. 

The most enjoyable aspect of this job was the satisfaction I got each day from knowing that I was helping in my own small way to make a  positive difference in the lives of children who were at risk. I left this role when the person I assisted resigned and moved back to Canada.

Middle management are very supportive with clients. Care staff very friendly and caring. Home care positions are not for the faint hearted or navigationally challenged. Very rewarding at times; although physically and emotionally gruelling at others. Clients are mainly very kind and welcoming of care staff. Have to maintain own vehicle to a high standard due to transporting clients. Sometimes have to travel a long distance for 30 minute shifts and may include long intervals of sitting in car between shifts without hourly pay rate. care staff are paid for travel between shifts and may be entitled to penalty rates and salary sacrificing. Have enjoyed getting to know some wonderful clients. Always feel better at work than at home!!!!!

As a youth support worker, dealing with different age kids, monitoring and support them for daily day routine.

I learned in my job place, about remote cultural values and cultural different and the way of dealing with isolated indigenous kids.

About our management and co-workers, I would like to mention we have good management support and support workers, i am good team player.

Working with different age kids, it is more difficult and facing lots of challenging, escalating temper and depression and nature of choice between different age.

I enjoy a lots when my hard works get success. Good manner and good behaved all kids at work it makes me happy.

Have enjoyed every moment in this role. Anglicare is a great and supportive employer who encourages you to achieve. Working in a remote area with few supports locally they have really gone out of their way to make me feel supported and valued.

The work is difficult and challenging but finding ways to work around challenges is very fulfilling and achieving good outcomes despite the challenges makes you feel great.

I feel I have grown and become a better person and practitioner since starting work with Anglicare and I look forward to what the future holds.
