Amcal Pharmacy

I loved working with the girls at Amcal Mundaring (in Western Australia). They were a team of gems that helped make each day pass with some good vibes & endless laughs. Everyone has a set role but you feel equal to everyone there which was a nice change from my other jobs. Endless opportunities to advance (actually encouraged by the boss - who works with us too, so she feels like a part of the team & not some disconnected head management which was nice...though separating their roles might be a good idea) & a nice community to become a part of in the hills too. You become a known local & start to look forward to your regulars coming in to brighten your day. Pay rate is pretty good too considering pharmacies tend to pay lower. Great working environment & plenty of work functions to create some good memories & hilarious stories. Loved working here & wished I didn't have to leave to be honest.

BUT

There needs to be changes made by management:

- Hiring more staff to take the load off of the team. A heavier load pushed onto fewer staff only leads to higher staff turnover (meaning endless trainees instead of decent qualified girls) + work not getting done = resentful staff, the eventual "I don't get paid enough for this" attitude leading to slacking, bad customer service & eventually customers turning away.
- Pharmacy staff are one of the most knowledgeable retail workers, paid the lowest in retail rates, for a company that earns an incredibly high amount. Paying the staff to match their increasing initiative & responsibilities would ensure the girls stay, are more reliable & would actually want to work well.
- An experienced manager is NEEDED at this pharmacy. It is not acceptable that this role has been dissolved. When there are disputes with customers & the girls have no-one qualified in conflict resolution to go to, that's where a lot of issues have arisen. Especially considering it is not majority of the staffs job description to handle managerial situations when they have escalated like that.

- Adding to that, it needs to be addressed that they still don't have SECURITY working there. It may seem like a cozy little community in Mundaring but the reality is that (like most medically related workplaces) pharmaceutical work comes with addictions. Customers who display unstable & concerning behavior. On top of that, there have been too many cases of aggressive & inappropriate customers who have put the girls in situations they should never have to be exposed to. It's a liability for the owners to leave wide open & it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. If security was present the situation could be handled swiftly, safely & de-escalated without risking the safety of the staff. Regardless of how bosses might want a business to appear to customers, having these roles & solutions in place would actually create more of a positive & responsible image than allowing these underqualified staff members to try to handle something like that. To hear from customers themselves on MULTIPLE occasions that we shouldn't be dealing with these cases & see how concerned they are on our behalf that security or management aren't there to step in, if anything goes to prove that they see the problem & it makes the business look worse off. 

My job responsibilities include:

	Customer service and stock ordering and maintenance
	Communicating with the pharmaceutical company reps regarding the new products in the market and promotions available
	Problem solving and trouble-shooting with the computer systems and software updates as well as the other staff members
	Managing a large quantity of webster patients using WebsterCare program and providing continuing support while liaising with other HCPs whether it be GPs or medical specialists
	Dispensing OTC and S4 medications using Fred dispensing software
	Learnt to work in a close knit pharmacy and develop and maintain good relationships with the customers/patients
	Gained knowledge about the Guild care programs including clinical interventions (including adverse events), staged supply interventions and more
	Gained deeper knowledge of the equipment available in the pharmacy for assisted care
	Settling the cash register, printing out end of the day reports and performing audit trails for any discrepancies with the cash register
	Active participation at the team meetings and writing minutes of the meetings
	Managing the dispensary flow
	Efficient in submitting the claim to medicare fortnightly
	Conducting the pharmacy promotion projects such as Celiac testing, Know Your Numbers, Kidney health check, Respiratory 
	check to name a few 
	Preparing extemporaneous products

I always had been looking foward to go to work, always had happy customers and a great team to work with.
Everyone was always out going, and friendly to work with. Not only did i learn from the work i was doing, but i had also learned so much from my co-workers. was Great!
The management was great also, kept everything in order and giving the chance for our customers too leave with a smile everyday of the week. Also great with team activities and meetings.
The most enjoyable thing about the job was being able to have the joyment of waking up every day looking forward to a good but yet busy day of work. always went home being please with how my shift went.
Hardest thing about the job was trying to keep up with everyone and everything else, even though i tried. and mainly dealing with impatient customers, even though i managed to get through and please them at the end. it was still hard because all customers shall be served and greeted the same, but at the end of the day. aslong as they were pleased when they had left.

My typical day at the pharmacy would include customer service, advice, invoice entry and filing, general shop functionality maintenance (cleaning, price changing etc) and dispensing drugs.

From my two years of working, I have learnt how to serve all walks of life, patience, the ability to carefully listen and empathise. It has also taught me how to cope under pressure, responsibility and how to give people health advice.

My co-workers are easy to work with, and we are all quite close.

The hardest part of my job would be helping difficult or hard to understand customers. Also customer death (as majority are elderly).

The most enjoyable part of my job is the satisfaction that I have helped a person and potentially made their lives easier. I also enjoy being given the responsibility to maintain the store and admin when needed.

I worked at Amcal Pharmacy during the beginning of my HSC year of High school. I worked there for 3 months and enjoyed my time for the most part. I managed to get the job fairly easy as the particular store needed front of shop staff that could work weekday afternoons and weekends. I wasn't really given proper training and was just shown certain things such as how to use the cash register, clean the store and stock shelves by other staff members. As someone we no prior experience working a found it difficult at times to get used to all the tasks I needed to perform during my afternoon shifts (3.5 hrs) such as serving customers, cleaning the entire store and sorting scripts, especially during busier hours. However, after some time I got used to the task and was able to manage my time a lot better. Overall working at Amcal I gained many skills such as customer service, cash handling, time management etc. which I can apply in future jobs. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The entire staff are incredibly friendly and hospitable. The store is always super clean and the customers are absolutely fantastic!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Honest the rushes. It’ll be dead quiet for an hour, then suddenly everyone comes in at once. It’s a little overwhelming.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Everyone is really kind and easy going. Christmas parties happen every year and we even do a secret santa. On Halloween we dress up (within reason) and everyone is very kindhearted.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
While there are quiet periods where we clean or put stock away, there are rushes when a bus comes in, or church comes out. The customers are super kind and friendly, and it’s a really nice experience.

I work Saturday mornings. The day starts with opening the store, some housekeeping, restocking, getting up to speed on what has changed/ introduced during the past week. Customers start arriving, we are then consumed with making sure that the clients are given the best possible service we can deliver. Every day is a learning experience. I supervise some Junior staff, it is enlightening to see how switched on that the younger generation is. The hardest part  of the job is realising that you cannot help everyone, but we strive to let the customer know that we hear their concerns and that we care.
To see a customer leave the pharmacy, having had a positive experience with a smile on their face is very satisfying.

working at amcal, there is always something different every day. You either have very sick people who are sad and need a little cheering up or you have people who couldn't be any happier. my co-workers are very persistent and I love working with them. I can talk or ask them anything and I can trust them with a lot of things. the most enjoyable part of the job is getting to meet new people and being able to start a conversation with them. the hardest part of the job is when it becomes a bit quiet, i get very bored but i seem to always pick up my spirits when a new costumer walks through the door

I loved working at Amcal.  It had a family environment.  We had a very loyal following of customers and the reason for that is the excellent customer service provided to them by both the front shop staff and the dispensary staff.  The Pharmacist was always available for a consult and displayed a caring attitude toward the customer.  It was not a "rushed" experience for the customer but a relaxed and friendly place for them to come for their health needs.
