ASYLUM SEEKER RESOURCE CENTRE

In my capacity of Program Support Officer at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre – Human Rights Law Program, I act as the legal receptionist and office administrator. I am responsible for all administrative work including filing and archiving, record keeping, answering all incoming calls, and other enquiries, collating court books, transcribing interview notes, dicta typing, updating client file, conflict and eligibility checks and appointment setting. My role consists of stepping in and providing administrative support primarily to the legal program as well as liaising with the client and providing plain English instructions to them. As a result of this experience coupled with my previous work experience, I have developed the ability to communicate efficiently with clients and stakeholders but also a strong level of organisational skills. The ability to adapt and be flexible with the workload and check the completion of one’s work has become second nature. The ASRC legal program is run by six lawyers and legal volunteers where I developed the capacity to work within a team environment as well as autonomously and perform tasks accurately, within deadlines and in accordance with directions given. Often, in such high-pressure environments, the ability to think on your feet and manage one’s own time is crucial especially when there are different stakeholders involved such as Barristers, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and clients.

Loved every moment of working with the Health Program as a Nurse volunteer, it was a very rewarding experience to help clients on a day-to-day basis.

Daily tasks include being the first point of call for clients, being responsible for booking appointments, and notifying Doctors or Allied Health Staff that members had arrived. Writing letter requests to waive medical expenses for clients due to visa status, scanning and faxing documents and ensuring these are uploaded to the appropriate client profile on Medical Directory; communicating with external service providers and agencies. Ensuring timely and accurate documentation of member care and filing and archiving of member data.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Gained more experience, meeting new people from different backgrounds. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Travelling with public transport when there's a bus replacement and if taking your own car it's hard to find a safe parking lot

Good cooperation, good understanding with respect 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Monday to Friday no weekend no public holidays work but it's depending upon the clients requirements

i used to have a good day while interacting with clients, two days a week which helped me to know much more the need of people within the company, the organisation was well managed and approachable co-workers,
the good time was when sharing information, negotiating responsively in the term of handling the client needs, on top of that the team work was fantastic.
the hard time was when solving the problems.

Great managers and supervisors. There were occasions where individuals outside the casework department would cross over into casework and seek to manage the department themselves. Which needs to be managed better. Other than this, my colleagues and supervisors were excellent and i had excellent supervisors. I volunteered here, so i am unsure what the remuneration is like, but i am sure that staff are paid fairly for their work.

ASRC is a great community organization doing an amazing job helping asylum seekers.

The casework team which I was part of worked closely with Legal, Employment, Medical teams which allowed me to learn new skills and become a better casework manager.

Wonderful to work with so many inspiring and caring people. 
Rewarding work to serve others and volunteer time in helping people from different countries learn the English language. 
Inspiring to hear the stories of refugees and asylum seekers and to feel a part of a united world by volunteering at ASRC.

This is an awesome place to work because people are all very nice. Particularly, you can learn as much as you want. As challenging as it is, you have a very supportive team in a very inclusive environment.

It was short time however being at ASRC was very important for me. I learned lots of things from staff and clients who came from different countiries. The managament of the ASRC is very friendly and supportive.
