This is a key leadership opportunity within the City Works Unit, responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering Council’s civil infrastructure maintenance and minor capital works programs. You will oversee road, footpath, drainage and associated assets, ensuring programs are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard that meets community expectations and statutory requirements. Working closely with internal teams and contractors, you will drive quality outcomes aligned with Council’s Road Management Plan, technical standards and budget commitments.
In this role, you will lead a team of Civil Works Surveillance and Inspections Officers while managing contractors and capital works delivery. You will play a critical role in responding to customer requests, investigating public liability matters, and providing expert engineering and technical advice across the organisation. With a strong focus on continuous improvement, safety, and service excellence, you will help shape infrastructure outcomes that directly impact the municipality’s liveability and long-term asset performance.
We’re seeking a highly capable and motivated civil engineering professional with:
- Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering and registration under the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019.
- Extensive experience in civil infrastructure maintenance, road construction, and drainage systems, including strong technical expertise in applicable standards and specifications.
- Proven leadership experience supervising staff and contractors to deliver safe, high-quality and cost-effective outcomes.
- Strong contract and project management skills, including procurement, tendering and contractor performance management.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritise and manage multiple programs within budget and timelines.
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and the community.
- Sound knowledge of Road Management Plans, asset inspections and compliance frameworks.
- Experience preparing reports, responding to customer requests and managing risk, including public liability investigations.
- Proficiency in MS Office, financial and asset management systems, and GIS software.
- A collaborative approach, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Valid driver’s licence and White/Red Card
