Mining Engineer — Job Description

Summary

Plans, designs, and oversees safe, efficient extraction of mineral resources; optimizes mine operations, ensures regulatory compliance, and drives cost‑effective production while minimizing environmental and safety risks.

Key Responsibilities

Develop mine plans and schedules (open‑pit and/or underground): orebody modelling, mine sequencing, and production scheduling.
Design mine layouts, stoping methods, and access (ramps, declines, shafts) to maximize recovery and minimize cost.
Perform resource and reserve estimation with geologists; support grade control and sampling programs.
Specify drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and material handling methods; optimize fleet productivity and haulage cycles.
Prepare capital and operating cost estimates, cashflow models, and economic studies (scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility).
Implement short‑term production plans and daily/weekly scheduling; monitor KPIs (tonnes mined, grade, strip ratio).
Oversee operations: contractor coordination, shift handovers, production monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Manage geotechnical and ground control programs; coordinate stability monitoring and mitigation measures.
Design and manage ventilation, dewatering, and water‑management systems as applicable.
Lead equipment selection, procurement, maintenance planning, and lifecycle optimisation.
Ensure HSE and environmental compliance; participate in risk assessments, emergency response planning, and community engagement.
Implement digital tools and automation (fleet telemetry, mine planning software, real‑time reporting).
Support permitting, stakeholder consultations, and regulatory reporting.
Mentor and supervise site engineers, technicians, and contractors.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Mineral Engineering, or related field.
2+ years mining industry experience (adjustable by seniority).
Proficiency with mine planning and design software (Deswik, Datamine, Surpac, Vulcan, Whittle, or similar).
Strong knowledge of mining methods, drilling/blasting, fleet operations, and material handling.
Competence in resource estimation, grade control, and basic geotechnical principles.
Proficiency with scheduling and modelling tools and spreadsheet financial modelling.
Strong communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional registration/licensure (e.g., P.Eng., Chartered Engineer) where applicable.
Experience with mine economics, capital projects, and feasibility studies.
Familiarity with automation, fleet management systems, and digital mining technologies.
Advanced degree (MSc) or specialized training in rock mechanics, ventilation, or mine design.
